 Ronette Karstens

Ronette has been with the Coach Rozy Team since 2015. She graduated from the University of South Dakota with her Bachelors Degree in Education.  She is currently a First Grade Teacher at the Gayville-Volin School District where she also coaches Girls Basketball.

Ronette was an outstanding athlete in high school and in college in basketball and track, still holding the HS Record for High Jump and points in a game and season. She competed and placed at State in track and played basketball in College. She has been teaching and coaching for 13 years at Gayville-Volin.  Her love for fitness, performance and developing young men and women to elevate to new levels- as well as being a driven individual who likes to work hard, focus and bring high energy to at all she does – helps her excel with the Coach Rozy Team.

Ronette has a husband, Justin who also coaches and is a part time assistant with the Coach Rozy Team. She has 3 boys, Caid, Spencer and Preston, whom she loves to spend time with and is involved with their athletic and school programs.

Kyle McKelvey, CSCS

Kyle has been with Coach Rozy Performance since 2016.    He holds his M.A. in Kinesiology and Sport Science from the University os South Dakota (USD) and is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS),  also XPS Certified (Certified EXOS Performance Specialist).  He did his internship at EXOS in Texas where he worked with  30+ NFL Off-Season athletes and 8 NBA Off-Season athletes.

Coach McKelvey was Graduate Teaching Assistant of Kinesiology Department at USD while working on his Masters degree.  He also was on the USD Track and Field Athlete where he was Team Captain, Pan American Shot Put Silver Medalist (Team USA), USATF Junior National Champion, 4-time NCAA National Championship Regional Qualifier, and a State, School, and Summit League Conference Record Holder.  He also served as Volunteer Assistant for USD Spring Football Strength and Conditioning in 2015.

Justin Karstens

Coach Karstens, married to Coach Rozy Performance Coach Ronette Karstens, has been with the performance program since 2017.  Teaching and Coaching boys and girls his whole career, Justin brings a wealth of knowledge and sports skill to the Coach Rozy Program.

Justing has been at Gayville-Volin for the past 13 years, where he as been Heads Boys Basketball Coach for the past 7 years (he was previously Girls Head Coach at GV before that) and has been an Assistant Football Coach for the last 7 years.

As mentioned, Justin’s wife Ronette also coaches and is an assistant with the Coach Rozy Team. They have 3 boys, Caid, Spencer and Preston, who are heavily involved with their athletic and school programs.

Aric Birkeland

Performance Coach 

Aric graduated from the University of South Dakota with a Kinesiology degree. He was an Coach Rozy assistant coach in 2017 & 2018. He also was an intern for the University of Purdue Strength & Conditioning were we worked with multiple athletic program during his time there. Coach Aric is currently pursuing his Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) certification, as well as, a Master’s degree in Kinesiology.

Trevor Woods, MA, ATC

Athletic Trainer for Yankton HS & Gayville-Volin HS

Trevor, MA, ATC has a bachelors degree in Athletic Training from South Dakota State University (SDSU) and a Masters Degree in Exercise Science from University of South Dakota (USD). He has been providing Athletic Training coverage to Yankton High School and Gayville-Volin High School for 17 years. He has been doing sports enhancement programs since 2002 working with numerous individual and team State Championship athletes.

He loves working with athletes to improve performance while helping reduce the risk of injuries for the athletes.

Tate Bruckner, CSCS

Performance Coach
Head Softball Coach – Mt. Marty College

Tate has been with Coach Rozy Performance since 2015 helping with the Summer Performance Programs and working with select teams during the year.  Coach Bruckner had worked with the Mount Marty College softball program the last two years as Head Coach.  Prior to that, Tate was strength and conditioning coach for the program as well as Mt. Marty Baseball. Bruckner, a 2014 MMC graduate and a 2009 Menno High School graduate.  Bruckner, who had been a baseball assistant coach the past two seasons, stepped in to run the softball program.

Cade Rickford

Performance Coach

Caid has been with Coach Rozy Performance since 2017 as an Assistant Performance Coach.  Prior to that, Cade was a Coach Rozy Performance Athlete all through his High School career where he as a stand out in Football, Basketball and Track & Field.  Caid finished up basic training for United States National Guards this past fall & winter, and jumped right back into taking over coaching duties and working with teams in the area.  He will be attending South Dakota State University (SDSU) in the fall of 2019 to pursue his degree to become a Strength and Conditioning Coach, and help again this summer with Coach Rozy Performance.

Lara Boman

Performance Coach

Lara started with Coach Rozy Performance in the summer of 2018. She graduated with bachelor’s degree in physics in May of 2018 from the University of South Dakota (USD) … and is now working on master’s degree in kinesiology and sport management from USD also.

In high school, Lara was a two-time all-conference honoree who led the Edina Hornets to the 2013 Lake Conference championship…played at the varsity level all four years and was named team captain for junior and senior seasons…scored five goals and led Edina with four assists during junior year…also competed in swimming and Nordic skiing at Edina.

She came to USD as a student/athlete going out for soccer where she helped the Coyotes reach the Summit League Tournament for the first time in program history and made the Summit League honor roll, earning distinguished scholar status and being named to the Summit League Commissioner’s List of Academic Excellence.

When a season ending injury occurred, Lara moved her athletic ability to Track & Field where she has been a standout.  Last year these were some of her accomplishments:

2017-18
Indoor Track & Field
Earned all-Summit League honors in the weight throw with a third-place result after tossing 63-7 … the throw broke the South Dakota program record for the weight throw … also took 12th in the shot put with a distance of 38-7 ½  … recorded a season best of 42-3 ½ in the shot put at the Dakota Realty Alumni Meet … recorded seven top-10 finishes during the season … named USTFCCCA All-Academic.

Outdoor Track & Field
CoSIDA Academic All-American … honorable mention All-America in the hammer throw … placed 22nd at first NCAA Championships … Summit League Champion in the hammer throw with a launch of 213-9 … placed seventh in the hammer throw at the NCAA West Preliminary to qualify for Eugene with a mark of 204-8 … won the hammer throw at the Howard Wood Dakota Relays with a mark of 198-1 … earned Academic All-Summit League honors … garnered CoSIDA Academic All-District honors … named USTFCCCA All-Academic … made the Summit League honor roll … named to the Summit League Commissioner’s List of Academic Excellence.

Ben Hammer

Performance Coach

Ben is from Dell Rapids, SD and is a student-athlete at the University of South Dakota (USD) where he is also on the Track & Field squad.  He is majoring in kinesiology and sport management major with an emphasis in exercise science.  Ben has been with Coach Rozy Performance since 2018.

In High School, Ben was a South Dakota state champion in the discus … five-time all-Dakota 12 Conference for track and field … held personal bests of 158-10 in the discus and 54-0 in the shot put.  He led the Quarriers to three South Dakota state titles in football … earned all-state and Elite 45 honors for football … helped the Quarriers finish runner-up at the South Dakota state tournament in basketball and was Dell Rapids High School student body president.

Before going to USD, Ben went to Dakota Wesleyan University whee he set DWU’s school record in the discus with a throw of 169-11 … twice earned GPAC athlete of the week honors … set personal bests of 52-0 for the shot put, 140-0 in the hammer throw and 49-0 in the weight throw.

At USD, Ben has been a stand out:

Indoor Track & Field
Placed fifth in the shot put at the Summit League Championships with a throw of 55-3 ¾ … also took ninth in the weight throw with a distance of 55-10 ½ at the Summit meet … moved to fifth in USD program history in the shot put with the throw of 55-11 ¾… sent the weight throw a season best 55-10 ½ twice during the season, at both the Summit Championships and the Dakota Realty Alumni Meet … recorded seven top-10 finishes during the season.

Outdoor Track & Field
Advanced to his first NCAA Championships in the discus … Summit League Champion in the discus with a throw of 196-6 … the throw broke the Summit League Championships meet record and the South Dakota school record … placed sixth in the shot put with a throw of 57-7 ½ at the Summit meet … also took 10th in the hammer throw at the league meet in 169-5 … placed 11th in the discus at the NCAA West Preliminary with a throw of 181-7 to advance to the finals … earned Academic All-Summit League honors … named USTFCCCA All-Academic … made the Summit League honor roll.
