Energy Drinks and Sport Drinks – YES or NO?!

In the next two weeks, we’ll look at the use of sport drinks and energy drinks, and whether or not they should be used.  Are sports drinks a WANT or a NEED?  Should you be drinking energy drinks all the time?First, lets get some things straight!  Sport drinks and energy drinks ARE NOT THE SAME THING!  You shouldn’t put Gatorade or Powerade in the same group as Redbull or Monster Energy drinks!

Many of the energy drinks can be bad for you because of the high level of sugar and other ingredients that are put in to make the drink!  We’ll come back to this later.

This week, we want to examine the use of sport drinks.  The good, the bad and the ugly of using them.  If sport drinks are consumed all day long, used as a way to hydrate or used as a liquid all day long, there can be some situations that may actually HINDER performance instead of helping, leading to problems.  However, when taken at the right time in the right situation, we can find some benefits with sport drinks!

Sport drinks can be taken:

  1.  For consumption DURING physical and strenuous activities
  2.  DURING or RIGHT AFTER a competitive game or a long workout that burns out the energy inside you

Sport beverages are made to rehydrate and replenish the carbohydrates and electrolytes. So sport drinks can benefit you when not only fluid replacement, but also carbohydrate and electrolyte replacement is desirable.

Studies have also shown because of the taste, compared to plain water, individuals tend to drink more sport drinks, getting more fluid into the body – and this in turn helps the body to retain fluids better after it has been consumed

So sport drinks can help you avoid dehydration, which can then help avoid other problems – like heat cramps, heat exhaustion and high levels of performance.

The key to keep in mind is – don’t use sport drinks like water and drink all the time, all day long!  If you do, sport drinks can be just as bad as drinking energy drinks, sodas/pop or other high sugar drinks all the time!

Food and drinks all have their place – you just need to know the right time and the right place to take them.  Find good alternatives and you’ll find your performance will excel!
