Step 2: Taking Control
There are no mistakes. The events we bring upon ourselves, no matter how unpleasant, are necessary in order to learn what we need to learn; whatever steps we take, they’re necessary to reach the places we’ve chosen to go. — Richard Bach
READ IT
dairyfarmerThere’s the story of an old dairy farmer who grabbed a stool, went out into the middle of the field, sat down and began to wait. An old friend walking by asked him what he was doing, to which the old “milker” replied, “Wait’n for them darn cows to back up here so I can get my milk’n done!”
How many of us could take the place of the farmer? We sit, wait patiently and expect great things and great results to come our way. Like that dairy farmer who waits for the herd, we need to know the linger could be long and the results the same – our success pail left empty.
Ashleight Brilliant, originator of “Pot Shots” wrote, “I would like to speak to whoever is in control of my life, and suggest some improvements!”
Who is in control of your life? Are you like the young married man who stated, “I HAVE A MIND OF MY OWN! – unless my wife told you differently!” We all get a chuckle from the joke, but in reality how often do we expect someone to take control over what we do, or presume that we will hear some great secret to give us direction. Always keep in mind – YOU ARE AT THE HELM AND IN CONTROL! Where you go is up to you. The improvements you secure are determined by you willpower and the control you take in situations.
Last week you got together with a leader or mentor who is doing what you want to do and has reached the level you want to rise to. You should have put down your top goal – where you’ll be after you’ve climbed the “52 Steps to Your Performance Edge. My question for you is; have you ever run stadium steps? If you haven’t, make sure it’s not the first workout you do. If you do, make sure that you take one step at a time. There are those that are able to leap three to four steps at a time…kind of like the person you met with last week!
A huge leap is tough to do at times. Bounding up the stairs takes preparation, hard work and dedication to achieve. Your success is like that. Sometimes taking smaller, baby steps is the key to taking control. By taking one step at a time, you will reach the top. The more you need to learn and the more you need to work, the longer the climb to the top will take. If you already have discipline, determination, dedication, trust, respect, and a great work ethic, the climb may go faster. Maybe you’ll be able to take two steps or three steps at a time because your foundation for “Success ShapeTM” has been put in place. If those are areas you need to work on, start slow, taking one step at a time. The key is to take control, keep moving forward and YOU WILL REACH THE TOP!
DO IT
This week, get out the goals you wrote down in week one or when you were with your mentor. On another sheet of paper, (or go to Lesson #2 in your Mark Roozen’s Performance Edge Training Systems: 52 Steps to Reaching Your Performance Edge in Life WORKBOOK) and at the top write down “5 MINI-STEPS to MY GOAL”!
On the paper, for the goal (or maybe you did more than one goal in which case you would do this process for each goal) write down five small steps that will assist you in reaching your big goal. For example, one of my goals this year is to write 6 books or training manuals. Great goal. Big goal. How do you achieve the goal? In my case I put down:
When I’d start the first book, when I would finish the first book, when I’d start the second book, etc.
Example: Start Date: March 1. Finish Date: June 1.
I then put down how I’d get the process started, the time I would put in each week to get the books done. By putting down my schedule of six books, I knew deadlines that I would have to meet to accomplish my 52 Step Goal!
Example: I knew from start to finish I would have 13 weeks. I needed to have 52 lessons in place – or 4 lessons per week to accomplish my goal.
Find someone to review my rough drafts and be my editor.
Example: There are a number of services that do this. Needed to find one that worked best for me. I actually had a friend who was an editor that helped me in this process.
Searched different ways to get the books published.
Example: Contact self-publishing companies (wanted to do it myself).
Examined the best way to get the book out so people could find out about it and get the book if they wanted it – which you did because it’s in your hands!
Example; Social Media Sources, book reviews, etc.
Take your goal and take control of the way you’ll reach the top step. By putting together the “5 MINI-STEPS”, achieving your “Success ShapeTM” will be an easy climb!
