Step 7: Smile, You’re on Reality TV!
“Every time you are honest and conduct yourself with honesty, a success force will drive you toward greater success. Each time you lie, even with a little white lie, there are strong forces pushing you toward failure.” – Joseph Sugarman

Some of the funniest and most comical moments are when we catch people being people. When they don’t know they are being watched. We know that to be true from the success of all the reality programs on television. It started even back to the old “Candid Camera” days that us old timers remember. Everyone has enjoyed watching those shows or your own home movies and seeing the surprise when the “actors” realize what they are doing is saved, forever, on film.CRlogonobackground
If you knew that you would be filmed every minute of each day, would you be different? If we could tape you, declaring your performance edge path, and from that point on video you –would we be surprised? Would your video be a drama, a comedy or a horror film? Would you be proud to show the tape to anyone that wanted to watch?
Thomas Jefferson, the third President of the United States, and its first Secretary of State, is best remembered as the main author of the Declaration of Independence. I remember him best for his insight and quotes. One I like best is the following phrase, “Whenever you are to do a thing, though it can never be known but to yourself, ask yourself how you would act were all the world looking at you, and act accordingly.”
We all hope that if “all the worlds’ eyes were on us”, the choices, acts and lifestyle we follow would meet a higher standard of excellence. As you journey farther into your performance plan, I want to ask you to imagine a level of excellence for yourself – even higher than the one you may have set when you started to work toward your PERFORMANCE EDGE. Now transfer this image, this picture of you obtaining levels you may have never thought possible, towards your actions and goals that you have set for yourself.
Orison Swett Marden said; “Just make up your mind at the very outset that your work is going to stand for quality…that you are going to stamp a superior quality upon everything that goes out of your hands, that whatever you do shall bear the hallmark of excellence.” Expecting something to happen, working at it with a high degree of quality, building up momentum to energize our goal, meeting our goal, all of these are parts that lead to that higher degree of excellence in anything we decide to do.
As you work closer to your PERFORMANCE EDGE, it takes effort to continue to strive, maintain high standards, look after small details and go the extra mile. IF you make those special efforts to do more – this WILL BE THE YEAR!!
If you start to wander, start to falter, start to lose momentum, keep in mind that someone might be watching! Remember to SMILE – YOU’RE ON YOUR OWN CANDID CAMERA!
DO IT
- Go back and take out the video you took of yourself on Step 1 explaining your goals that you wanted to accomplish on your performance journey! How have you changed? Have you gotten closer to those goals you set out? Has your “YOU” changed; are you more confident, have more energy, have more drive and desire. What differences can you see? Can family or friends see a difference?
- Tape another segment and state your progress. Now state where you will be in another 6 weeks! Remember, we now have you on tape declaring your steps to reaching another PERFORMANCE EDGE!
- Make sure to not only say the re-established goals on tape, but write them down. Put the pen to paper and put these new goals up where you can see them everyday.
- This week, let others know what you plan to do and when you plan to do it. Tell as many people as possible so you have eyes and ears that can help hold you to task. Maybe you even have a friend that would be your “film crew” for a day. Have some fun and enjoy the journey – YOU ARE ON YOUR WAY!
